The Vandelay Variables are a high-voltage brass-infused rock outfit from Phoenix, Arizona, known for blending desert funk, horn-heavy chaos, and a touch of interdimensional weirdness. Their sound — affectionately described as “post-modern bs rock for people who overthink ska” — has made them a local favorite at Valley dive bars, art festivals, and questionable afterparties.

Since debuting their first EP “Shrinkage & Other Emotional States” in 2022, the band has developed a loyal following of fans who claim to “get it,” though no one has fully confirmed what “it” is. Their single “No Soup for You” hit cult status on local college radio, and the group recently opened for a Devo tribute night at Crescent Ballroom, where one reviewer called their set “like if Talking Heads met a marching band in an alley behind a Radio Shack.”

The Vandelay Variables feature Jack Klompus on vocals and keyboard, Sue Ellen Mischke on guitar, Bob Sacamano on drums, FDR (Franklin Delano Romanowski) on bass, and Rusty the Horse on cowbell — a lineup that perfectly balances chaos, charisma, and clashing egos.

When they’re not melting faces with their signature song “These Pretzels Are Making Me Thirsty,” the band can usually be found arguing over royalties at Monk’s Café.
